Southern Cross Hospitals Perioperative Nursing Course
(Available within Auckland Region)
In Auckland Region, we have developed a 5-month, modular Perioperative Nursing Course which is the initial component of a 2-year commitment to one of our operating room departments.
It includes all the essentials of basic OR nursing - to international standards and Nursing Council of New Zealand requirements.
Applications for the next planned course, scheduled for January 2012 , are now closed, and so any interest in future courses should be communicated using the email address provided below.
The key introductory modules are:
- Operating Room skills
- Sterilisation processes
- Surgical specialties - including general surgery, urology, laparoscopic surgery,gynaecology, orthopaedic surgery and otorhinolaryngology (ENT)
- Anaesthetics
- Post-Anaesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
The course includes written course materials, online learning modules and block courses including presentations from a wide variety of presenters. There are independent study requirements and evaluation & assessment components.
Clinical placements will be conducted at the Southern Cross hospital at which you are employed, including rostered duties, allowing you to practice what you learn.
This programme is ideally suited for new graduate nurses planning a career in the operating room, and also Registered Nurses with surgical experience wanting a career change. This programme is also suitable for operating room nurses returning to the workforce, after completing a Return to Nursing programme. Our approach allows you to grow into your role as an operating room nurse, whilst being supported by an organisation that recognises - and increases - your value.
Upon completion of the 5-month Perioperative Education programme, you will become part of an OR team, where you can consolidate your learning in a supportive environment.
