Our latest developments

Our recent investments at Southern Cross Hospital, Hamilton have improved the quality of healthcare services available to a wide group of patients - not only Southern Cross members. We treat patients with any kind of health insurance, as well as patients funding their own treatment, and those whose treatment is publicly funded -either by ACC or District Health Boards.

One of our recent improvements is the development of a top class cardiac surgery service in addition to our other elective surgery options. In line with our mission of improving accessibility and quality of healthcare for New Zealanders, we’ve invested heavily in our Hamilton East, Von Tempsky Street hospital over the last five years.

Our new Intensive Care Unit

We now boast seven fully-equipped operating theatres and a recently completed, purpose built six bed Intensive Care Unit.  This ICU contains the very latest intensive care equipment and technology, providing the best possible 24-hour monitoring and treatment. Our team also has access to on-site digital radiology services.

ProHeart & Southern Cross - working together

Our highly experienced and well-trained intensive care nurses work alongside surgeons, intensivists and anaesthetists from the ProHeart group creating a cardiac surgery service that treats patients from the Waikato region and beyond. In fact, Southern Cross Hospital, Hamilton, is now one of only two private cardiac facilities between Auckland and Wellington, receiving patients from throughout the country.

Our recent ICU and theatre upgrades were carried out after thorough consultation with the ProHeart group and they exceed the very high standards of the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society.

The ProHeart team operating at our hospital includes:

• Mr Nand Kejriwal (MBBS, MS, MCh, FRACS) - a consultant cardiothoracic surgeon at Waikato Hospital. Nand acts as a Senior Lecturer in Surgery at the University of Auckland and supervises advanced cardiothoracic surgery training for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.

• Two intensivists, who stay on site overnight following surgery. The intensivists have Fellowship of the Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine and participate in professional audits.

• Two cardiothoracic anaesthetists.

This team of independent medical specialists is supported by Southern Cross Hospital’s nursing team within the Intensive Care Unit, with their extensive ICU service experience.
